Myra Melford is Chicago blues, Fernando Pessoa, architecture, Cecil Taylor. She also brings a stellar list of musical collaborators, from Ron Miles and Tyshawn Sorey to Joëlle Léandre and Nicole Mitchell. All of this she brings to Walter, where she generously and curiously lets resident Sam Comerford step into her universe. A few days after their meeting, it will be your turn to step in. Food and drink — that’s how these evenings roll…
Before the duo set, we will listen to a collaboration between Myra Melford and six students from KASK & Conservatorium. They spent two days working at Walter with Sam Comerford and Teun Verbruggen to prepare for a performance with Melford.
As a resident at Walter, Sam Comerford explores the space between avant-garde, improvisation, and the Irish folk tradition of his youth. The residency connects to his research project Radical Variations, Primitive Forms: The Melodic Language of Tommie Potts in Improvised Music.
After an intense residency week in December with John Francis Flynn, Jozef Dumoulin, and Samuel Ber, Comerford has a cunning plan for the spring. In March, he meets the remarkable American pianist Myra Melford and shares that magic with a few students from KASK & Conservatorium Gent. May is Thunderblender-time! Hendrik Lasure and Jens Bouttery challenge the Irish fiddler Ultan O’Brien — and vice versa.
