Composer, saxophonist and singer Vanesa Díaz Gil, from Lanzarote, is a jazz musician based in Brussels since 2018. In 2021 she finished her Master studies in Jazz Composition and Arranging at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels graduating cum laude under the tutelage of Kris Defoort and Michelino Bisceglia.

This year The Canarias Jazz Showroom Festival expands its network and invites Vanesa to present a program of her own compositions for the ensemble The Woodii Orchestra at Werkplaats Walter, Brussels.

“The Woodii Orchestra is a musical project for a mixed ensemble with a wide variety of musical influences. A small crossover orchestra of 11 musicians comprising a classical string quartet, a jazz quartet extended with woodwinds (tenor sax and bass clarinet) and voice. For this project Vanesa has chosen to work with Brussels based musicians from different nationalities.

The musical landscape of this project embodies many of the sonic cultures she has been exposed to throughout her life, such as Latin and South-American Folk, Flamenco and Spanish Pop, Canarian folk and Indian Music; all linked through Jazz and Western Classical Music. She takes different elements of these styles to construct a new scenery of sound, resulting in a form of expression that connects without imitating any of the previously mentioned genres.

“I strive to embrace mixture with simplicity; I compose to invite the listener to travel to uncharted spectrums of their imagination. The propulsive force of the music lies on its strong yet emotionally accessible melodies, lifted by modern harmonies and driven by captivating grooves. In sharing my vulnerabilities and weaving beauty into them, I might bring light to the darkness, might reach the other, might help us all to attain a healthier mind and a wider heart.”
