ANTON COENE – RÉCIT VISUEL
Un petit coup de pied à l’intérieur

L’odeur âcre et sèche d’une vie enfermée flottait encore dans ce bâtiment du quartier de Kuregem à Bruxelles. L’héritage du logeur qui avait lui-même construit et loué des studios demeurait en partie — le souvenir encore palpable. Les habitants étaient partis, l’entrée avait été maçonnée. Nous avons escaladé le toit de l’immeuble adjacent. Teun Verbruggen m’a prêté un coup de pied pour entrer.

Le départ avait été précipité. Dans certaines pièces, le petit-déjeuner était encore sur la table. Les draps semblaient retenir la chaleur de la nuit. D’autres espaces révélaient les traces d’une recherche hâtive : l’ultra personnel, l’indispensable, arraché à la hâte. Aucune ambiguïté quant aux conditions misérables : murs et meubles portaient les stigmates. Sur un cadre de fenêtre, je remarquai les mots corrigés : « Vivo solo hasta la muerte. » Ce n’est qu’une fois chez moi qu’une application de traduction donna toute sa profondeur à la phrase : « To live alone until death. » Le poids de ce lieu persista, longtemps après le départ des habitants.

Aujourd’hui, le bâtiment respire une nouvelle vie. Il a été rénové et fait désormais partie de Werkplaats Walter, un lieu de création à Anderlecht où artistes, makers et musiciens peuvent œuvrer sans compromis. Ce qui, en octobre 2022, était un espace clos de survie est aujourd’hui une maison ouverte à la création. A little foot inside

The acidic, dry smell of a life trapped still lingered in this building in Brussels’ Kuregem district. The legacy of the slumlord who had built and rented studios with his own hands was only partially erased. Residents had fled, the entrance bricked up. We climbed over the roof of the adjacent rear building. Teun Verbruggen gave me a foot in.

The departure had been hasty. In some rooms breakfast was still on the table. The sheets seemed to hold the warmth of the night. Other spaces revealed signs of a hurried search: the deeply personal, the essential, taken in haste. No doubt remained about the appalling conditions: walls and furniture bore the traces. On a window frame I read the corrected words: “Vivo solo hasta la muerte.” Only at home did a translation app give the phrase its full weight: “To live alone until death.” The heaviness of the place lingered long after the residents’ departure.

Today, the building breathes a different life. It’s been renovated and is now part of Werkplaats Walter, a creative hub in Anderlecht where artists, makers and musicians can work without compromise. What in October 2022 was a closed space of survival is now an open house for creation. If you want to see it with your own eyes, you are welcome during the opening weekend, October 10 and 11.
