Walter's Wanderings: Weekly Dispatch (35)

Hit me with your rhythm stick
Hit me!
Hit me!

Versie in het Nederlands
Version en français: en bas.

All was well on the Western front.
Until that golf ball rudely knocked Walter’s brain out of orbit.

Hit me with your rhythm stick, hit me, hit me!

Though Walter had quite a different rhythm stick in mind…

Ian Dury hitting it hard since 1979.

Since the “Palingbeek incident,” Ian Dury’s voice has been echoing mockingly in Walter’s head.
A painkiller and a bit of rest — easy for the folks at Jan Yperman Hospital to say.
But the brain fog and memory lapses really hit hard.

Thankfully, some clarity came from you, dear reader. Along with questions —
the more critical kind, or sometimes disguised as requests.

Another 24h improv, Walter! And how about an improv tournament, with group stages, quarter-finals and a final? Like pétanque, but with music.

I'mot entirely sure what to expect. But isn’t that the very essence of WW?

Could the community of improvising musicians stage a gesture of solidarity?

Walter’s on it. Short circuits are familiar territory.
Ambiguous signposts, a faltering GPS.
Despite the memory gaps, one idea kept flashing:

A series of Open Practices.
For musicians who want to explore detours on their improvisation journey.
A monthly open/shared session where they can test methods, share research, try out new compositions, or simply play together in the unknown.

We kick off on Saturday 11 October, and then every second Saturday of the month.

Open practice? Shared practice?
Got a better name? (oh yes, please!)

Who would you like to meet there?
Would you like to host or shape one of these sessions yourself?

Hit me with your rhythm sticks and let me know!

HIT ME!

P.S. No time today for Walter’s long detours? Quick GPS version:
Monthly open practices for musicians, starting on Saturday 11 October. Good idea?
