Rubin Kodheli / Nate Wooley's Seven Storey Mountain VI - try-out / Vitja Pauwels CD release

Walter is thrilled to invite composer and cello virtuoso Rubin Kodheli over as an opening act of this pre-Ghent Jazz evening. Rubin is the 21st century’s most pioneering cellist and a creative rebel and he just happens to pass by Walter beginning of July. Time to present him and his genre-defying compositions blending threads of rock, jazz and classical influences to our Brussels based audience.

Forging a distinctive voice in the New York scene over the past twenty years, Kodheli has closely collaborated with many of the most influential artists of our time including Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Henry Threadgill, Snoop Dogg, Meredith Monk, and Lee Konitz. His film work includes compositions for the Academy Award-Winning Precious (2009).

Op dinsdag 9 juli vertrekt Walter op reis. Ver gaat hij het niet zoeken, maar op Gent Jazz is het altijd warm thuiskomen tussen gelijkgezinden. Hij vult er meteen ook The Garden Stage! Daarom gonst Werkplaats Walter de week vooraf van Nate Wooley’s Seven Storey Mountain. Nate geeft uitleg bij de sleutels en manieren van improviseren aan diegenen die nog niet vertrouwd zijn met het concept en oefent met hen de muziek in. Daarna volgen een aantal repetitiedagen met de voltallige bezetting.

Met een toonmoment en try-out in Werkplaats Walter zwaait Walter meteen de zomer in, de deur dicht en trekt erop uit. Tijd voor vakantie! Maar kom eerst een pintje drinken en genieten van deze exclusieve preview. Wedden dat je op 9 juli ook naar Gent Jazz afreist?

Day at Half Speed is the first solo album of Belgian idiosyncratic guitar player Vitja Pauwels, one of the most fresh and innovative young guitarplayers at this moment. You probably heard him with his band Bombathazz. Day at Half Speed is a recorded concert he did in May 2017 in Trondheim (Norway) where he stayed for a year to work on this project under guidance of Stian Westerhus.

Using guitar pedals, computer processing, synthesizers and samples - played and triggered with the toes - he tried to maximize some of the compositions’ potential with attention for melody and form.
